Fall Protection

Falls are the leading cause of on-the-job fatalities in the construction industry, and are a persistent hazard in many others as well. Thankfully, almost all fall-related incidents can be prevented by the use of effective fall protection systems. Magid specializes in personal fall arrest systems, carrying full lines from leading manufacturers MSA, Miller® by Honeywell, DBI-SALA® by Capital Safety®, and others, all at industry-low prices.

Types of Fall Protection Equipment

DBI-SALA by Capital Safety 1102000 Standard Vest-Style Harness
  • Harnesses: Anchor the wearer to a fall protection system via D-rings at the back and/or sides. In case of a fall, harnesses secure the wearer, distributing weight among the shoulders, torso, and hips.
  • Shock-Absorbing Lanyards: Connect the harness to an anchor point, limiting potential falls to the length of the lanyard. Shock-absorbers prevent injury by reducing the force of impact at the end of a fall.
Miller FL113 Mini-Lite Fall Limiter
  • Self-Retracting Lanyards: Typically a galvanized wire or nylon web lanyard that retracts from a spool, offering improved freedom of movement. A rapid descent will trigger the retraction mechanism to lock, stopping falls quickly.
  • Confined Space Systems: Tripods and other hoist systems designed to raise and lower workers in and out of confined spaces such as manholes.

Highlights of OSHA's Fall Protection Requirements

  • General industry employees working on a surface with an unprotected edge over four (4) feet above a lower level must be protected by a guard rail, safety net, or personal fall arrest system. The corresponding guideline in the construction industry is six (6) feet above a lower level.

  • Fall arrest systems must limit arresting force to a maximum of 1800 lb. when using a body harness.

  • All fall protection systems must be inspected prior to use for any deterioration or damage, and equipment showing any such defects should be removed from service immediately.

  • In the event of a fall, arrangements must be made to provide prompt rescue services if the employee is not able to rescue him or herself.

  • All employees who may be exposed to fall hazards must be trained on the OSHA standards, the nature of hazards at the worksite, as well as use, maintenance, and inspection of fall protection equipment, among other things. For more training requirements, and to view the entire standard, visit www.osha.gov.
When stopping a fall, a personal fall arrest system must:

  • Limit maximum fall arresting force on an employee to 1,800 pounds (8kN) when used with a full-body harness.

  • Limit free fall distance to less than six (6) feet (1.8m), and be rigged in such a way as to prevent contact with a lower level.

  • Bring the employee to a complete stop while limiting maximum deceleration distance to 3½ feet (1.1m).

  • Have sufficient strength to withstand twice the potential energy of a worker free falling from a distance of six (6) feet (1.8m) or the free fall distance permitted by the system, whichever is less.
Examples of basic components of a fall protection system:

Anchor points:
  • Cross Arm/Connector Strap
  • Beam Anchors/Trolleys
  • Roof Anchors
  • Tripod & Davit Systems
  • Mounted D-Ring/D-Bolt Connectors
Connecting devices
  • Shock-Absorbing Lanyards
  • Single Leg
  • Twin Leg
  • Fall Limiter – Will limit the free fall distance, therefore limiting the fall forces.
  • Self Retracting Lifelines
Body Wear
Magid only recommends using full body harnesses for fall protection due to the potential for serious injury that may result in using a body belt.

Applicable Standards
There are numerous OSHA regulations, ANSI and CSA standards that apply to fall protection and confined space entry. Employers must understand these regulations and standards when selecting the appropriate fall protection and confined space entry/retrieval equipment.
