Confined Space Equipment for Fall Protection

Confined spaces create complications. No more than one worker can enter and exit at a time. In certain narrower passages, the entry point may strictly be overhead. For those in this position, fall protection equipment becomes necessary for support.

Anticipate these environments with confined space equipment, including tripod systems and lanyards for performing tasks in narrow or awkwardly arranged vertical areas. Explore solutions from 3M™, MSA, and more brands at Magid®.

The Need for Confined Space Equipment

Heights aren’t the only injury risk in the workplace. Confined spaces pose a unique set of hazards. Areas are often just large enough for one person. Yet, the arrangement means that a worker can’t fully stand up, needs to reach a certain distance, has a limited amount of time to perform a task, or requires support from above.

Common scenarios requiring confined space equipment include working in tunnels, storage tanks, utility vaults, trenches, elevator shafts, or HVAC ducts.

Types of Confined Space Equipment for Fall Protection

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 provides recommendations for protecting employees in confined spaces. In these areas, the following are often needed to support a worker and reduce injury risks:

  • Retrieval equipment and hoists for lowering a worker into a confined space and supplying them with the necessary equipment and tools
  • A full-body harness, retractable lanyard, and lifeline for being lowered into and lifted out of the confined space
  • A tripod and davit arms for lowering and raising a worker
