Magid offers a full range of flame-resistant (FR) clothing from shirts and coveralls to jackets and balaclavas designed to protect workers from heat and flash fire hazards. With NFPA 70E and/or NFPA 2112 safety certifications and quality comfort, your workers can get the job done safely without worrying about burns or other flame-related injuries.
Certified and approved based on ASTM standards, flame-resistant clothing is essential for protecting workers exposed to thermal hazards like flames and high temperatures. When deciding between different FR clothing options, keep in mind that:
FR clothing is far less likely to ignite after exposure to an arc flash or thermal hazard (compared to clothing made with non-FR fabrics) and can be extinguished quickly. These properties decrease the potential degree of the wearer’s injuries.
FR clothing is less likely to tear, rip, melt, or break open when exposed to thermal hazards or high temperatures, shielding your workers’ skin from further injury
Based on the OSHA 1910.132 and CFR 1910.269 standard, employers are required to provide appropriate FR clothing to workers in contact with or near a potential thermal hazard due to how far flames and debris can travel

What are the Differences Between Flame Resistant and Flame-Retardant Clothing?
Consider factors such as durability, level of protection, comfort, and cost when choosing between FR clothing items. It's also important to think about the needs and requirements of the wearer and the working environment, as characteristics between clothing items can vary, especially when considering flame-resistant versus fire-retardant clothing.
Flame-Resistant Clothing is made with inherently FR materials, meaning the FR properties are a characteristic of the fibers of the fabric. Examples of FR fibers include Nomex®, Kevlar®, and modacrylic fibers.
Flame-Retardant Clothing is made from materials that are not inherently flame-resistant, such as cotton, and have been treated with chemical flame retardants to make the clothing flame resistant. Flame-retardant clothing can also be designed to slow down the combustion process.
Construction and Ratings of Flame Resistant Clothing
Magid offers both inherently FR and treated FR solutions as well as options with dual-hazard protection to shield against both electric arc flash and hydrocarbon flash fires. We offer NFPA 2112 and NFPA 70E compliant garments in CAT Levels 1 to 4 to provide your workers with safe and reliable protection for a variety of applications. These ratings indicate how much protection is needed based on the energy created by an arc flash incident (in calories per cm²) with higher ratings indicating a greater level of protection.

When comparing different flame-resistant clothing items, Magid has made it even easier by categorizing heat, flame, and thermal resistance into four levels of protection consideration:
Heat Resistance: PPE in this level is recommended for working around heat but not flames. For example, if you bump your arm into a hot object, but the surrounding work environment doesn’t contain sparks or flames, Contact Heat Level 1 clothing is a worthwhile choice. However, you shouldn’t use garments with this rating around sparks and flames because they can cause the material to melt.
General Fire Hazards: Clothing in this tier is rated according to the ASTM D6413 FR standard for use with any job with a fire hazard. This means the gear will resist ignition if it comes into contact with sparks or flames and self-extinguish. Many items in the Magid FR collection reach this level of protection.
Arc Flash Hazards: Gear in this tier is based on NFPA 70E (Categories 1-4) and ASTM F1506 ratings. These items are typically used for electrical, utilities, and public works tasks, meaning they’re rated against the potential for arc flash. Since they can’t be conductive, these items can’t have any metal in them, so they’re typically made with a core material like fiberglass.
Flash Fire Hazards: Items in this tier are NFPA 2112 Rated and UL Certified for use in oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical, and manufacturing work.
