We created a plan to reduce our injury rate by 50%. The company implemented Kiken Yochi Training (KYT), a Japanese inspired training plan that focuses on hazard (Kiken) and prediction (Yochi). I wanted to increase the effectiveness of KYT by promoting a hands-on approach to training, which I have found is the best method to prepare workers for what might happen on a shop floor. We put our employees through a series of exercises. We asked workers to dress a “Safety Man” with the appropriate PPE for their assigned application. We let workers test the difference between Kevlar gloves and a cotton glove by allowing them to cut through both materials with a razor and scissors. We also gave workers a hammer and asked them to test the strength of a steel-toed shoe.
